WHAT ARE BRANCHED CHAIN AMINO ACIDS?
BCAAs are the most popular amino acid supplement, with good reason. The 3 branched chain aminos - Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine - comprise 35% of muscle tissue.
WHAT DO THEY DO?
BCAAs (particularly Leucine) are heavily metabolised for energy during intense training, and need to be replaced to prevent muscle loss.
They are also crucial to muscle growth and recovery, acting as modulators of protein synthesis.
Athletes in all sports are now using BCAAs before, during, and after training to reduce potential muscle breakdown, and to speed recovery.
Some bodybuilders and other athletes on a high protein diet also add BCAAs to protein meals, to improve protein quality, thereby increasing protein synthesis and muscle growth.
