This question has been kicking around bodybuilding contest circles for as long as contests themselves. When comparing chicken and fish in a bodybuilding diet, both have their own set of pros and cons. Let’s have a look and see if one is actually better than the other for dialing in your physique for a bodybuilding show (or photo shoot, beach holiday, wedding, etc….).
THINGS THEY HAVE IN COMMON:
Both are high in protein, providing essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair and growth.
Both are versatile and can be prepared in various ways, allowing for a variety of flavors and cooking methods to suit individual preferences.
Both are widely available in most grocery stores.
Both are Low in fat. Removing the skin on chicken reduces the fat content, making it a suitable option for those looking to maintain low body fat levels during contest preparation. White Fish is probably a little lower again in fat compared to chicken breast. Salmon is an exception to this, having almost as much fat as protein. If you are doing the higher fat lower carbs or keto style of nutrition plan, then Salmon is still a great option.
CHICKENS GOOD POINTS:
- Is generally cheaper than fish
- Fish can be smelly to cook
- Some fish have a strong flavour (depends on your taste)
- Chicken can be more satiating than Fish. It doesn’t take long to digest white fish and then the hunger can kick in.
FISH GOOD POINTS:
- White fish has less calories than chicken breast
- Fish has many varieties with slightly different flavours and texture.
- Chicken breast, especially when overcooked, can become dry and less palatable.
- Fish has a better profile of essential micronutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins like Vitamin D, vitamin B12, and selenium,
- Rich in omega-3 fatty acids: Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and trout are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties and support overall heart health.
The choice between chicken and fish in a contest bodybuilding diet depends on individual preferences, budget, nutritional goals, and ethical considerations. Swapping over to Fish to reduce a few calories is usually done as an advanced step to get really shredded or a move to accelerate fat loss for someone behind schedule. Most people get too hungry swapping all their chicken meals over to fish. Many bodybuilders include a combination of both chicken and fish in their diets to ensure a balanced intake of protein and essential nutrients.
